Le cimetière militaire britannique de La Neuville-aux-Larris

Le cimetière militaire de La Neuville-aux-Larris, qui jouxte le cimetière civil, a surgi de terre grâce aux troupes africaines françaises présentes dans le secteur au mois de juin 1918. Il a accueilli les corps de 98 soldats britanniques, 137 soldats français et 42 soldats allemands. Le 3 août 1919, les Neuvillats ont célébré la fête de la reconnaissance nationale et le dimanche 2 novembre suivant, une foule nombreuse assiste à la messe des morts puis se rend au cimetière militaire pour y déposer une couronne sur laquelle est inscrite : « La jeunesse de La Neuville-aux-Larris à ses vaillants défenseurs ». Régulièrement entretenu par les jeunes filles neuvillates, ce cimetière a alors revêtu sa plus belle parure.

Les corps des soldats français et allemands ont été transférés en 1921 dans des nécropoles françaises et allemandes du département. Le gouvernement britannique a fait du lieu un cimetière définitif en 1925, sur un terrain de 32 ares, offert par l’Etat français qui l’a acheté à la commune de La Neuville-aux-Larris. Les soldats britanniques qui y reposent ont pour la plupart combattu dans le bois de Courton, proche de La Neuville-aux-Larris, du 20 au 24 juillet 1918. Ceux qui sont décédés en juin 1918 ont combattu à Bligny ou à Chaumuzy, succombant pour certains dans les sections médicales de La Neuville-aux-Larris.

Ce petit cimetière rappelle que l’empire britannique a offert à ses soldats un lieu digne de sa grandeur et de leur sacrifice. La Commonwealth War Graves Commission entretient le cimetière, si méticuleusement que des décennies après sa création, il est toujours en état d’accueillir des visiteurs sensibles à son caractère « so british », avec ses murs de clôture bas, ses stèles blanches en pierre, ses allées en pelouse et ses plantations de fleurs bien rangées l’égayant à la belle saison.
